It is absolutely necessary for people with braces to have oral hygiene. In and around the braces is where plaque forms after eating food. The patient should maintain good oral hygiene by flossing and cleaning everyday to protect the teeth from decay, decalcification and color changes. For daily use, patients should maintain a braces cleaning kit.It is also useful during traveling.

A braces cleaning kit generally has the following items: a bag, a toothbrush, toothpaste, mirror, tissues packet, dental wax, dental floss and a cup to hold water. During the early weeks of using braces, it is common to get irritation inside the mouth. To soothe the irritation, rinse the mouth with warm, salty water. You can also use dental wax to get relief from irritation.Dental wax acts as a barrier between the braces and inside of your cheeks and lips thereby protecting the gums and cheeks from irritation.

Generally the orthodontist gives dental wax after your braces are set up. Dental wax can also be bought from local pharmacies. On the bracket that is causing irritation, take a small piece of wax and place it directly on it. If you swallow a little of the wax, do not worry because it is non-toxic. Long term relief can be got from using dental silicone. dental silicone lasts longer than dental wax. For it to stick, your braces must be dry. The inside of your cheeks will toughen up with the regular use of braces. Making you require less amounts of wax later.

Your orthodontist will approve you to use fluoride toothpaste and brush. Do not use whitening toothpaste. It is recommended to use angled brush. You can also use a small spiral dental brush or proxy brush to remove food particles before you brush. To clean effectively between braces and gums using a regular toothbrush, use it at an angle of 45 degrees. Make sure you clean all the parts of the teeth and mouth.

To remove any plaque, brush thoroughly in a circular motion. Between the braces you may get toothpaste deposits. Special care should be taken for brushing around braces. Too much force applied while brushing may change your braces position or even break them. Brush lightly, and most preferably, use a toothbrush with soft bristles, so that it does not make any adverse effect on the braces.

The deposit of toothpaste between the braces and teeth can be removed by rinsing the mouth several times. You can check for any traces of plaque by using a mirror. You can sterilize your mouth using mouthwash. Where a toothbrush cannot reach any plaque, use dental floss instead to remove it. Use waxed floss to floss your teeth daily in the evening. You should floss between the braces and the teeth.

To remove the floss, rinse the mouth well. You don't require special floss for your teeth, although if you want, you can go for different flavors or colors. The purpose can be served by any floss which has a plastic threaded needle. Under the arch wire for each bracket, the plastic threaded needle helps to remove the floss found there. Every three months, it is recommended to replace your toothbrush with a new one. This will help to keep your braces clean and hygienic, and prevent most problems that come with braces.
